Paintings During the nineties, and particularly in his recent works, Craig Flannagan's art combines the human figure with the partly abstract and richly coloured world of a rectangular frame. A traditional entry-point to these pictures is constructed through the universal image of the human body. Yet these semi clothed models are surrounded and combined with various areas of flat painterly bravado, or, held within illusive three dimensional spaces that hint at a traditional treatment of perspective. Such a blending of contrasting styles can be fraught with danger, balancing the various elements to produce a harmonious and complete picture is a risky business.
